Visit Marseille,Largest port city in the Mediterranean

2024年3月2日(土)フランス及び地中海最大の港湾都市マルセイユに寄港。まるでハリウッドのような文字看板がお出迎えしてくれました。

On Saturday, March 2, 2024, the ship called at Marseille, the largest port city in France and the Mediterranean. We were greeted by a text sign that looked like something out of Hollywood.

古くは共和制ローマ時代、ユリウス・カエサルの『ガリア戦記』にもその名が登場する歴史ある都市。またフランスの国歌『ラ・マルセイエーズ』はフランス革命の折ここマルセイユからパリに向かった連盟兵(義勇軍)の行進曲『ライン軍のための軍歌』が元となったとされています。この一連の革命を題材としたジャン・ルノワール監督の映画を日本に戻ったらもう一度観てみようと思いました。

Marseilles is a city with a long history, as evidenced by its mention in Julius Caesar's "Gallic Wars" during the Roman Republican period. The French national anthem, "La Marseillaise," is said to have been based on the "Military Anthem for the Army of the Rhine," a march of the French League soldiers (volunteer army) who marched from Marseille to Paris during the French Revolution. I decided to watch Jean Renoir 's film about this series of revolutions again when I return to Japan.

マルセイユはご存じの通りロゼワインの名産地でワイン造りの起源はボルドーやブルゴーニュより古いとされています。

As you know, Marseille is famous for its rosé wine, and its wine-making origins are older than those of Bordeaux and Burgundy.

船からフォレスタパークの方を眺めるとマルセイユの文字看板が見えました。この看板高さが10.6Ｍ総幅が100Ｍ近くあるそうです。

Looking toward Forrester Park from the boat, we saw the Marseille text sign. The sign is 10.6 meters high and nearly 100 meters wide.
